The research group of the Institute of Computer Science and Interactive Systems (Prof. Hoppe and Prof. Ziegler) has a focus on distributed cooperative learning and working environments, interactive systems and design of user interfaces. Several previous projects are also relevant for Ontoverse:

During past years flexible tools for cooperative work, e.g. for external knowledge structures, have been designed. These works combine approaches of developing concept maps with the installation of a group memory. Within the scope of the research project INVITE (sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF) the program TopicMiner has been developed, which can automatically extract and visualize structures from spoken language. This system supports creative brainstorming and early phases in developing processes. With the system MatrixBrowser new techniques for visualization and interaction have been realized for complex networked information structures - such as ontologies. Another current BMBF-project focuses on "virtual working and learning in project networks" and helps to investigate possible solutions for virtual, distributed creative work in companies, whereas ontologies are used to enable relations between the players.

Furthermore, the project WISE (also funded by the BMBF) aims at developing a design methodology for context-adaptive web-services. Thus it is an example for the institute's research work in the areas of human-computer-interaction, multimodal user interfaces, information visualization and context-adaptive systems.

In the area of cooperative and distributed learning environments the following projects have been successfully accomplished: DEMOS (1996-97), NIMIS (1998-2000), DiviLab (2000-02), SEED (2001-04), COLDEX (2002-05), Network of Excellence KALEIDOSCOPE (2004-07).
