Information Science deals with analyzing, providing, searching and retrieving relevant (and mostly digitally stored) knowledge via information and communication processes. Sub areas of information science are information retrieval, knowledge representation, empirical information science (including bibliometrics, informetrics, webmetrics, scientometrics), knowledge management and the market for information. The focus within the scientific research is set on information content, but also regarded are technical developments closely connected with it. In certain aspects information science therefore overlaps with informatics and computational linguistics as well as with economics in other aspects. Within information science, ontologies are considered as special means of knowledge representation; mainly regarded are the structuring of knowledge and the use of thesauri and classification systems.

Within the Ontoverse project, which aims at establishing a collaborative knowledge platform, the expertise of information science can be supportively engaged in different ways. A central aspect will be the ontology design itself; the specification of structural principles, the design of a prototype ontology and the consideration of established topical thesauri or taxonomies. Closely connected is the design of the ontology wiki, as the access to the ontology and the user rights have to be adjusted to the structure of the ontology.
