Earlier work at the Department of Computational Linguistic in Düsseldorf

The main areas of research at the Department of Computational Linguistics at the University of Düsseldorf are language modelling and NLP, with special focus on hierarchically structured lexica. The projects "Simulation of Lexical Acquisition" (1992-1993) and "Dynamic Extension of the Lexicon" (1994-1999) were completed as part of the project cluster SFB 282 "Theory of the Lexicon". They were concerned with the incremental extension of lexica with unknown words by taking contextual information into consideration. Different methods for machine learning were developed to achieve this goal. The project "Modelling Subregularity in the Lexicon" (2000-2002), also integrated in SFB 282, focused on modelling regularities, subregularities and exceptions in the lexicon. New methods for dealing with non-monotonic inheritance were developed. The implemented formalisms permitted verifiable formal modelling of the research results or hypotheses, and required the creation of executable software. Applications such as QDATR, QPATR and QType are the core of our Düsseldorf family of environments for grammar development, which are also used by researchers outside Germany. Our department is represented in the DFG research team "Frames and Functional Concepts" (from August 2005) with the projects "Formal Modelling of Frames and Functional Concepts" and "Automatic Classification of Nouns according to the Concept Type". The basic methodological approaches include formal concept analysis, unification-based grammar formalisms and machine learning based on statistical models.
